Algorithm is a man's name, worn down by a thousand years of use. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi worked in the House of Wisdom in ninth-century Baghdad, and when his methods reached Europe his name came loose from him and became a word for method itself. He is still in every computer, anonymous, load-bearing.
The vocabulary of science is a record of who was paying attention, and when. Algebra is Arabic — al-jabr, the reunion of broken parts. Chemistry still carries the alchemy it grew out of and would rather forget. The words are honest about a lineage the textbooks sometimes tidy away: knowledge did not begin in Europe and travel outward. It pooled in Baghdad and Alexandria and a dozen other cities first.
What I love is that these etymologies refuse the myth of the lone genius. A word like algorithm only exists because a method was useful enough to outlive its author, cross a language barrier, and find a new mouth to live in. Discovery is a relay. The baton is a word.
These are the word origins of knowledge itself — the etymology of study, calculation, and discovery. Each one is a small correction to the story we tell about where understanding comes from.
We say we advance science, as if it were a frontier. But the words remember it differently: as a long conversation, conducted across centuries and languages, in which everyone borrowed and no one finished.
