The Greek word for someone who withdraws became the name for medieval Christians who were bricked into small rooms attached to churches — sealed in alive, with a window to the altar and a window to the world, and expected to stay until they died.

Anachōrētēs comes from the Greek verb anachōrein (to withdraw, to retire), from ana- (back) and chōrein (to go, to make room). In late antiquity, the word described the Desert Fathers — Christian ascetics who withdrew from society into the Egyptian and Syrian deserts in the third and fourth centuries. Anthony the Great, who retreated into the desert around 270 CE, is considered the first Christian anchorite. The withdrawal was the identity.

In medieval Western Europe, the anchorite tradition took a specifically architectural form. An anchorite — or anchoress, for women — was enclosed in a small cell, usually attached to a church, in a ceremony that resembled a funeral. The bishop read the Office of the Dead. The anchorite entered the cell. The door was sealed. The cell had three windows: one to the church interior for receiving communion and observing the Mass, one to the outside world for receiving food and speaking to visitors, and one admitting light. The anchorite was dead to the world. The enclosure was a tomb for the living.

Julian of Norwich, enclosed in her cell at the Church of St Julian around 1373, is the most famous English anchoress. She wrote Revelations of Divine Love, the first book in English known to be written by a woman. She composed it in her sealed room, drawing on visions she received during a near-fatal illness. Her most quoted line — 'All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well' — was written by a woman who had chosen to be buried alive.

The practice declined sharply after the Black Death and the Reformation. Being bricked into a room lost its appeal when plague was already sealing people in. The word survived in historical and spiritual writing. Modern anchorites are extremely rare — a handful exist, mostly in the Catholic tradition — but the concept of voluntary withdrawal persists in retreat centers, hermitages, and the secular fantasy of the writer's cabin. The Greek word for withdrawal names a form of commitment that looks like its opposite.
