The Autobahn is Germany's highway system — and the myth that it has no speed limits is only partly true: about 30 percent of it has no permanent limit, and Germans have argued about this for decades.

Autobahn is German for 'automobile road,' from Auto (automobile, shortened from Automobil) + Bahn (road, track, path). The compound is prosaic: it names a road for cars. The first Autobahn section opened between Cologne and Bonn in 1932, during the Weimar Republic — not under the Nazi regime, as is commonly believed. The Nazi government did expand the system massively, and Hitler used the Autobahn in propaganda, but the concept and the first construction predated his rise to power.

The Autobahn system was designed for military logistics as well as civilian travel. The roads were wider than necessary for civilian traffic, with gentle curves and sturdy construction — designed to move troops and equipment quickly. After World War II, the Autobahn became the backbone of West Germany's economic recovery. The East German Autobahn deteriorated under Communist governance and was reconstructed after reunification.

The speed limit question is the Autobahn's most famous feature. Approximately 30 percent of the Autobahn has no permanent speed limit — these sections have a 'recommended speed' (Richtgeschwindigkeit) of 130 km/h (81 mph) but no legal maximum. The remaining 70 percent has variable or fixed speed limits. Proposals to introduce a universal speed limit have been debated in the Bundestag repeatedly and defeated each time. The unlimited sections are a point of national identity.

English borrowed 'autobahn' as a proper noun for the German highway system and as a common noun for any high-speed highway, particularly one without speed limits. Kraftwerk's 1974 album Autobahn (with its twenty-two-minute title track) introduced the word to English-speaking music audiences. The German road became a metaphor for speed, efficiency, and a specific kind of freedom — the freedom to drive as fast as your car can go.

The word carries a specific connotation: engineered speed, German precision, and the luxury of no limits.
