The upholstered armchair with a cushioned back is named after a shepherdess — because in the pastoral fantasies of the French court, tending sheep was imagined as a comfortable activity.

Bergère is French for 'shepherdess.' The chair was named during the Regency period (1715-1723), when the French aristocracy indulged in pastoral fantasy — the conceit that rural life was charming, leisurely, and ideally suited to well-dressed people sitting down. Shepherdesses appeared in paintings, on porcelain, and in poems. They also appeared, nominally, in the names of furniture designed for people who had never touched a sheep.

The bergère distinguished itself from the fauteuil (the standard French armchair) by having upholstered panels between the arms and the seat, creating an enclosed, enveloping form. The enclosed sides blocked drafts and provided more cushioning. The seat cushion was separate and removable, unlike the fauteuil's fixed upholstery. The chair was designed for intimate, private comfort rather than formal display.

Louis XV had bergères placed in his private apartments at Versailles, where they served for reading, conversation, and napping. The chair's association with intimacy and privacy made it inappropriate for formal reception rooms, where the fauteuil and the canape reigned. The hierarchy of French seating was precise: throne, fauteuil, bergère, chaise, tabouret. Each had its social context and its correct room.

The bergère survived the Revolution, the Empire, and the Republic. Modern versions are produced by every major furniture manufacturer. The word retains its French pronunciation in English, which gives it a luxury connotation — an Ikea chair is a chair, but a bergère is a bergère. The shepherdess who named it never existed. The comfort she supposedly enjoyed is the only real thing about the story.
