Circumnavigation is sailing around — Latin circumnavigatio combined circum (around) with navigatio (sailing, navigation), and the circumnavigation of the globe was the proof that the world was, in fact, round and finite.

Latin circum (around, about) combined with navigare (to navigate, to sail) and navigatio (navigation, sailing). The circumnavigation was the complete circuit by water — not just crossing an ocean but going all the way around. The concept required the belief that the world was spherical: if the earth were flat, there would be an edge, and you would reach it before completing the circuit.

Ferdinand Magellan left Spain on September 20, 1519, with five ships and 270 men. He was killed in the Philippines in April 1521, but his expedition continued under Juan Sebastián Elcano, arriving back in Spain on September 6, 1522, with one ship and 18 men. They had sailed for three years and lost 252 men. The circumnavigation proved that the Americas were a separate landmass, that the Pacific was vastly wider than Columbus had assumed, and that one could reach Asia by sailing west. It was the most consequential voyage in the history of geography.

Francis Drake's circumnavigation of 1577-1580 was the second, and it was also primarily a raiding voyage — Drake plundered Spanish ports and ships along the Pacific coast of South America. His Golden Hind returned to Plymouth with enough treasure to pay off the entire Elizabethan national debt. The circumnavigation as proof-of-concept had become the circumnavigation as commercial and military strategy.

Today circumnavigation is practiced by solo sailors, record-seekers, and adventure travelers as a personal achievement. Ellen MacArthur's 2005 solo non-stop circumnavigation record (71 days, 14 hours) was purely athletic. The commercial significance of the route had long since transferred to aerial circumnavigation — the round-the-world flight records of the 20th century, now the quotidian reality of international aviation. The world is still finite; the achievement of going around it has changed meaning.

Magellan's voyage settled the question of the world's shape by the most direct possible method: someone went around it. The proof was not mathematical or theoretical but empirical — 18 exhausted sailors returning to the port they had left three years earlier from the opposite direction. The world was round because they had just proved it with their bodies.

The 252 men who died in the process do not appear in the word circumnavigation. The word describes the achievement, not the cost. This is how the language of exploration works: the successful completion names itself; the deaths that made it possible are attached to other records. Magellan's circumnavigation was, from another perspective, one of the most lethal maritime expeditions in history. Both descriptions are accurate. Only one became the word.
