Latin crux means "cross" or "stake"—a wooden beam used for execution. Crucifigere meant "to fix to a cross." Crucifixus was the past participle: "one who has been fixed to a cross." The Romans did not invent crucifixion—Persians and Carthaginians used it earlier—but they industrialized it. Spartacus's rebellion in 73 BCE ended with 6,000 slaves crucified along the Appian Way from Capua to Rome.
The execution of Jesus of Nazareth around 30-33 CE transformed the word. Within decades, the cross shifted from a symbol of state terror to one of redemption. Paul of Tarsus wrote in his letter to the Galatians: "I have been crucified with Christ." The past participle became an identity. Early Christians were initially reluctant to depict the cross—the earliest surviving crucifix dates to around 420 CE, a carved ivory panel on the door of Santa Sabina in Rome.
By the medieval period, the crucifix was everywhere. Giotto, Cimabue, and the Florentine painters of the 13th century revolutionized how the crucified body was depicted—moving from the stiff, triumphant Christ of Byzantine icons to a suffering, human figure. Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece of 1516, painted for a hospital, showed a Christ covered in plague sores. The crucifix became a mirror for whatever pain the viewer carried.
The crucifix now appears on church steeples, hospital walls, courtroom walls in some countries, and as jewelry worn by billions. It is simultaneously a religious symbol, an art-historical subject, a cultural marker, and a fashion accessory. No other execution device in history has been so thoroughly redeemed by the faith that grew around it.

The word "excruciating" literally means "out of the cross"—pain so severe it could only be compared to crucifixion. That the cross became a symbol of hope rather than horror is the most radical act of reinterpretation in religious history.
