The song was in fact a new composition (not a traditional Austrian folk song as many believe) written in English for an American audience, but its use of the edelweiss as a symbol of Austrian national identity proved remarkably effective. 'Edelweiss' as a result became the most globally recognized symbol of Austrian national sentiment despite being, in that specific form, an American theatrical invention. The actual botanical plant — a small, woolly-leafed alpine composite — received international recognition through the musical rather than through the mountaineering and botanical traditions that had made it famous in German-speaking Europe.
