Elizabeth I danced a galliard every morning as exercise — six or seven, before breakfast, well into her sixties.

Gaillarde comes from the French adjective gaillard, meaning vigorous, lively, or spirited. The word itself may trace to Gaulish galia (strength). The galliard was a Renaissance court dance in fast triple time, characterized by leaps, kicks, and the cinq pas — a sequence of five steps followed by a leap, landing on both feet. It was the most athletic dance in the Renaissance courtier's repertoire. A galliard was exercise disguised as etiquette.

The galliard was typically paired with the slower pavane: a pavane-galliard pair began with stately walking and ended with vigorous leaping. The contrast was social and physical. The pavane showed composure and rank. The galliard showed youth and vitality. In courts where political power depended on the appearance of vigor, the galliard was a political statement. A king who could dance a galliard was a king who could lead in battle. Or so the symbolism insisted.

Elizabeth I of England was an exceptional galliard dancer. The Venetian ambassador reported in 1589 that she danced six or seven galliards each morning. Sir John Davies's poem Orchestra (1596) describes the galliard in detail. Elizabeth continued dancing them into her sixties, and the performance was both genuine exercise and political theater — a queen past sixty demonstrating physical vitality to a court watching for signs of weakness.

The galliard faded in the early seventeenth century, replaced by more restrained dances. Shakespeare mentioned it. By 1650, it was archaic. The word survives in music — Renaissance composers wrote hundreds of galliards — and in the English adjective 'gallant,' which shares the same root. The vigorous dance gave English its word for courtly bravery.
