“Before genuine settled into English, genuen carried the same Latin truth for a generation.”
The Latin word genuinus meant native, natural, or innate: not acquired, not pretended, not imposed from outside. Roman writers used it to describe character that grew from within a person, inherited traits, the authentic quality of a thing that had not been altered. Cicero used genuinus to mean something like legitimate or true-born, and later writers extended it to mean authentic or unadulterated. The word probably connected to genu (knee), via the Roman practice of a father placing a newborn on his knee to acknowledge the child as his own, though this etymology was disputed even in ancient times.
French adapted the Latin genuinus and produced words including genuyn and genuin in the late medieval period, and English writers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries borrowed the concept with varying spellings. The spelling genuen appears in English texts from the 1500s, particularly in religious and philosophical writing where the distinction between true and counterfeit, native and foreign, genuine and spurious mattered greatly. The Reformation intensified this vocabulary, as reformers insisted on genuine scripture against what they saw as corrupted tradition.
The spelling was not fixed in Early Modern English. Printers and scribes wrote genuine, genuen, genuyne, genuyn, and other variants interchangeably through the sixteenth century. Richard Mulcaster's Elementarie of 1582, an early attempt to regularize English spelling, did not resolve the matter. It was not until the seventeenth century that genuine became dominant, largely through its consistent appearance in the King James Bible of 1611 and in the prose of writers who followed its orthographic lead.
What genuen and its variant spellings were reaching for was a concept that English had not previously had a precise word for. Native, true, real, natural, and honest all captured parts of it, but none quite named the specific quality of being the thing it claimed to be, unreplaced at the source. Genuinus gave English that concept, and genuen was one of the early spellings through which English speakers tried to hold the Latin idea in their own alphabet, before the form genuine stabilized.

Genuen is a spelling that did not survive, but it held an idea that did. The concept it was reaching for, that a thing can be authentically itself and not substituted or counterfeited, turned out to be one that English needed badly, and the language kept working at the Latin word until genuine locked in. The variant spellings are archaeology: they show the moment English was absorbing a concept it lacked, trying different phonetic envelopes until one fit.
The Latin genuinus asked whether a thing had come from within or been imposed from outside. The question is still live. When we call something genuine, we still mean what Cicero meant: this is what it says it is.
