“The open, wind-swept moorland of Britain carries one of the oldest words in the English language — and 'heathen' comes from the same root, because in the medieval church, the people who still lived on the heath and worshipped old gods were literally the heath-people.”
Old English hæth (open uncultivated land, heathland) gave both 'heath' (the landscape) and 'heathen' (one who is not Christian, literally a dweller on the heath). In early medieval England, Christianity spread along Roman roads and through settled towns; the rural heathland communities who had not converted kept their pre-Christian practices. To be a 'hæthene' was to be from the heath, outside the civilizing Christian community. The landscape and the religious status were the same word.
Heath ecology is defined by acidic, nutrient-poor soil and low-growing shrub vegetation — primarily heather (Calluna vulgaris), gorse, bilberry, and cross-leaved heath. The vegetation manages and perpetuates the heathland: heather is flammable, and periodic burning prevents succession to forest. Without management (fire, grazing), heath becomes scrub and eventually woodland. The open landscape requires active maintenance to remain open.
Thomas Hardy's fictional Egdon Heath in The Return of the Native (1878) was the defining literary heath: 'A place perfectly accordant with man's nature — neither ghastly, hateful, nor ugly; neither commonplace, unmeaning, nor tame; but, like man, slighted and enduring.' Hardy described the heath as a being with personality — ancient, indifferent, surviving everything. Egdon Heath was modeled on the actual heathlands of Dorset.
British heathland has declined by 80% since 1800 due to agricultural conversion, afforestation, and housing development. The remaining heath — Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Dorset heaths, the Norfolk Brecks — is now protected as a priority habitat. What sustained the heathen and the heather is now a conservation target.

The word heathen contains the heath. To be a heathen was to live out there, on the open uncultivated land, outside the church's reach. The heath was where civilization had not yet extended — the marginal land, the unconverted landscape.
Hardy's Egdon Heath endures everything — cultivation attempts, settlements, characters who cross it and are changed. The heath outlasts the human intentions imposed on it. What sustained the heathen and the heather is now the landscape that needs protecting from us. The marginal became the precious.
