“A small Spanish muffin carries the name of a weeping saint from Galilee”
Mary of Magdala appears in the Gospel of Luke carrying ointment and weeping at Jesus's feet. Her name was Latinized from the Hebrew place-name Migdal Nunyah, Tower of Fishes, on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. By the 8th century, the Catholic feast of Mary Magdalene on July 22 was celebrated across France and Spain, and small sweet cakes distributed at pilgrimage hospices had begun to carry her name.
Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago encountered these cakes at monasteries from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela. The shell shape used in the French madeleine version echoed the scallop shell emblem of the Camino itself. Marcel Proust, in 1913, wrote the passage that made the madeleine a universal symbol of involuntary memory, describing a narrator dipping one in tea and recovering an entire childhood.
The Spanish magdalena diverged from the French madeleine in form: the French version is baked in a shell-shaped metal mold, while the Spanish rises in a fluted paper cup into a domed shape with a cracked sugar crust. Lemon zest or orange blossom water is standard flavoring. By the mid-20th century, the individually wrapped magdalena had become the default Spanish school-breakfast pastry.
Today magdalenas are packaged in cellophane wrappers by companies like Bimbo and La Bella Easo and sold in every Spanish supermarket. The word appears in children's language textbooks as an early vocabulary item. From a saint weeping in Roman Galilee to a classroom snack in 21st-century Madrid is a journey of two thousand years, and the name has not changed.

In Spain today, magdalenas are one of the most ordinary objects imaginable: a cellophane-wrapped sponge cake in a paper cup, sold in packs of eight at every petrol station and supermarket. The Proustian weight the French version carries has not transferred to the Spanish form. What the magdalena carries instead is a quiet domestic authority: the right smell for a school morning, the right sweetness for ten o'clock.
The saint's name survived two thousand years of translation, canonization, pilgrimage, and industrial food production to end up on a biscuit tin. As one food historian put it: she wept in Galilee and they named a cake after her.
