Marae in Māori means a sacred meeting ground — a complex of buildings and open space that functions as the communal heart of an iwi (tribe) or hapū (sub-tribe). The word exists across Polynesia in variant forms: marae in Tahitian, malae in Samoan, meʻae in Marquesan. The concept predates European contact by centuries. Across Polynesia, the marae was the place where ceremonies, gatherings, debates, and rituals occurred. It was simultaneously a political, spiritual, and social institution.
A traditional Māori marae includes several elements: the wharenui (meeting house), which is often carved to represent a named ancestor — the ridgepole is the spine, the rafters are the ribs, the porch boards are the arms. Inside the wharenui, you are literally inside the body of an ancestor. The ātea (courtyard) in front of the wharenui is where formal speeches and the pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) take place. The wharekai (dining hall) is where meals are shared. The dead lie in state in the wharenui before burial.
Marae protocol (tikanga) governs behavior on the marae. Visitors must be formally welcomed through the pōwhiri before they may enter. Women call visitors onto the marae with a karanga (high-pitched call). Speakers follow a specific order. Shoes are removed before entering the wharenui. These protocols are not optional — they are the law of the marae, and they apply regardless of the visitor's status or background.
There are approximately 900 marae in New Zealand. Some are urban — the Te Puea Marae in Auckland served as emergency housing during Auckland's homelessness crisis in 2016. Others are rural, associated with specific hapū and maintained by communities that have used them for generations. The marae is not a museum. It is a functioning institution.

The 2016 decision by Te Puea Marae to house homeless families demonstrated that the institution adapts to modern needs while maintaining traditional protocols.
The word has no English equivalent. 'Community center' misses the spiritual dimension. 'Temple' misses the political dimension. 'Town hall' misses the ancestral dimension. The marae is all of these at once, and the word cannot be translated without losing something. It entered English because it had to.
