Mauri is a Māori concept of the life force or vital essence that inhabits all living things and some non-living things. Not every stone has mauri, but a mountain that stands unchanged for centuries does. Not every drop of water has it, but a river that sustains generations of people does. Mauri is what makes something not just physically present but spiritually and socially alive. It's what gives a place power. It's what ancestors carry. It's what flows through genealogy.

The concept is ancient. It appears in Māori creation stories, in the karakia (incantations) that accompany important actions, in the protocols for treating land and water with respect. To damage something's mauri—to pollute a river, to cut down a ancient tree without reason—is to commit a spiritual and social harm. The thing itself is diminished. Its capacity to sustain life is weakened. Its connection to the people who depend on it is severed.

In 2017, New Zealand did something unprecedented. The Whanganui River, which flows through New Zealand's North Island, was granted legal personhood. The law recognized the river not as a resource to be owned but as an entity with its own rights, its own mauri. The Whanganui Māori people have long understood this. The law was finally catching up. It meant that the river could sue to protect itself. It meant that harming the river was not just damaging a resource. It was violating a person.

The legal recognition of mauri changed how we think about nature. If a river has personhood because it has mauri, what about forests? What about mountains? What about other waterways? Several other Māori rivers have been granted legal status since. The concept is spreading. It suggests that law and spirituality don't have to oppose each other. It suggests that recognizing the life force in non-human things is not primitive—it's the future.
