Miḥrāb (محراب) in Arabic originally meant a hall, a chamber, or a private room — its pre-Islamic meaning was a room of honor or a throne room. The root ḥ-r-b is related to combat and sanctity (ḥarb means war; ḥarām means sacred, forbidden). The mihrab in a mosque is a niche — usually semicircular — set into the qibla wall, which faces Mecca. The niche indicates the direction of prayer. It does not contain anything. It is an empty space with a specific orientation.
The mihrab may have evolved from the apse of Byzantine churches or the Torah niche of synagogues — earlier traditions of embedding a sacred orientation into architecture. The earliest mosques, including the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, may not have had mihrabs; the architectural feature developed in the early Umayyad period, possibly during the renovation of the Medina mosque under Caliph al-Walid I around 707 CE. The adoption was practical: in a large mosque, worshippers far from the front need a visual cue for the qibla direction.
The mihrab became the most decorated element in mosque architecture. Tiles, carved stucco, calligraphy, muqarnas (honeycomb vaulting), and gold mosaic concentrate at the mihrab more than anywhere else in the building. The mihrab of the Great Mosque of Córdoba (now the Mezquita-Catedral), built in the tenth century, is covered in Byzantine-style gold mosaic — a gift from the Byzantine emperor to the Umayyad caliph. Two civilizations collaborated on a single niche.
English borrowed mihrab from Arabic in the eighteenth century. The word has no figurative extension in English — it names one architectural element in one type of building. Its untranslatability is its precision: there is no English equivalent because no English building has a mihrab. The word entered English because the concept could not be translated, only borrowed.
