In the 1500s, Milan was the luxury goods capital of Europe. Milanese merchants exported silk, ribbons, gloves, armor, and above all, finely crafted hats and bonnets. English traders who imported these goods from Milan were called Milaners—dealers in Milanese wares. The word first appeared in this form around 1529.

The spelling shifted to milliner by the 1580s, and the meaning narrowed. A milliner was no longer a general importer of Milanese goods but specifically a maker and seller of hats, bonnets, and headwear accessories. The milliner's shop was a fixture of every English market town—a specialist in the one accessory that no one, man or woman, could be seen in public without.

The trade reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rose Bertin, who dressed Marie Antoinette, was the most famous milliner of the 1780s. In London, milliners on Bond Street and Regent Street served aristocratic clients. The hat was the most socially significant garment—it announced your class, your taste, and your awareness of current fashion.

The hat's decline in the 20th century nearly killed the milliner's trade. John F. Kennedy's bare-headed inauguration in 1961 is often cited as the moment men stopped wearing hats daily. Women's hats retreated to weddings and horse races. The milliner survives as a specialist artisan, and Milan survives in the word.
