Carl Linnaeus named the genus Mimosa in 1753, drawing from the Greek mimos, 'mimic' or 'actor.' The sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) folds its leaves inward when touched, as if recoiling in modesty. To 18th-century botanists, this looked like animal behavior — a plant imitating the flinch of a startled creature. The name captured the uncanniness of a plant that seemed to feel.
Mimosa pudica is native to Central and South America. Spanish and Portuguese colonizers encountered it in the 1500s and were baffled. Robert Hooke examined it under his microscope in the 1660s, trying to find muscles or nerves. Charles Darwin studied it obsessively in the 1870s, timing the speed of the leaf-closing signal. The mechanism — rapid water pressure changes in specialized cells called pulvini — was not fully understood until the 20th century.
The name migrated from the sensitive plant to its showier relatives. The golden-flowered acacias of Australia, often miscalled mimosas, became the mimosa of florists and perfumers. In the early 1900s, 'mimosa' became associated with the fluffy yellow blossoms sold on French streets for International Women's Day on March 8th. The shy plant's name was transferred to its extroverted cousin.
Then came the cocktail. The mimosa — champagne and orange juice — was likely invented at the Hôtel Ritz Paris around 1925, named for the drink's resemblance to the yellow mimosa flower. A plant named for its shyness lent its name to a brunch cocktail. The Latin mimic became a flower became a drink. Linnaeus would be bewildered.

The mimosa plant's response to touch is not shyness. It is a defense mechanism — the wilting leaves look dead to herbivores, who move on. What Linnaeus read as imitation was actually deception. The plant does not feel embarrassed. It plays dead.
