The word for a cheap, unbound printed document comes from a twelfth-century love poem so popular that handwritten copies of it were passed around Europe like political leaflets.

In the twelfth century, a short Latin love poem called Pamphilus, seu de Amore (Pamphilus, or On Love) circulated widely across medieval Europe. The poem was popular enough that copies were passed hand to hand, and the name 'Pamphilus' became shorthand for any short, unbound text that circulated informally. Old French shortened it to pamphilet, and by the fourteenth century, English had 'pamphlet' — a word derived from a fictional lover's name.

The Reformation made the pamphlet a weapon. Martin Luther's 1520 pamphlets — To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation, On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church, On the Freedom of a Christian — were printed in the thousands and distributed across Germany. Thomas Paine's Common Sense (1776) was a pamphlet. The Federalist Papers were pamphlets. The form was cheap, fast, and disposable — the opposite of a book. A book is permanent. A pamphlet is urgent.

Pamphlets were how radical ideas traveled before newspapers existed. The Levellers in 1640s England, the philosophes of Enlightenment France, the abolitionists of the American North — all used pamphlets. The form's cheapness was its power: anyone with access to a press could produce one, and anyone with a pocket could carry one. The pamphlet was the blog post of every revolutionary movement from 1500 to 1900.

The word now suggests something slight and often annoying — a health pamphlet in a doctor's office, a religious pamphlet left on a doorstep. The revolutionary energy has drained from the form. But the structure persists: a short, unbound, single-topic printed document designed for wide distribution. The love poem's name became the propaganda tool's name became the waiting room's name. Pamphilus would be confused.
