Récamier is named after Juliette Récamier (1777-1849), a Parisian socialite whose salon attracted the leading intellectual and political figures of post-Revolutionary France. In 1800, the painter Jacques-Louis David portrayed her reclining on a backless, scrolled-end daybed in a flowing white dress. The painting made the pose, the dress, and the furniture iconic. The piece of furniture took her name.
Madame Récamier did not design the furniture. The form — a daybed with scrolled or rolled ends and no back — existed before her. Similar pieces appeared in ancient Roman triclinia and in Directoire-period French interiors. David chose the furniture because its classical simplicity matched the Neoclassical aesthetic he championed. The painting was as much about the furniture and the style as about the woman.
The récamier became fashionable in early nineteenth-century Europe precisely because of David's painting. Furniture makers produced versions in the Empire and Restoration styles. The form spread to England, where it influenced the design of the chaise longue and the fainting couch. The painting generated demand for the furniture, which generated demand for copies of the painting. Artist and craftsman fed each other's market.
Juliette Récamier herself remained famous for her salon — the last great Parisian salon of the old style, where writers, politicians, and thinkers met for conversation. Chateaubriand, Benjamin Constant, and Madame de Staël all attended. She gave her name to a piece of furniture not because she made it but because an artist placed her on it. The furniture remembers the painting. The painting remembers the woman. The woman remembered the conversations.
