A pike in Middle English was a long wooden pole with a metal point. Soldiers carried pikes into battle; they were also fixed across roads as defensive obstacles to stop horsemen or raiding parties. A turnpike was a spiked pole mounted on a pivot so it could be rotated to open or close the way. The compound appears in English writing by the late fifteenth century as a specific type of movable barrier.
By the seventeenth century, turnpikes were being used at town entrances and on roads where fees were collected. The logic was mechanical: a traveler approaching the gate would pay the toll, the pike would be turned aside, and the road would open. The Turnpike Acts passed by the English Parliament from 1663 onward formalized this into the Turnpike Trust system, which handed road maintenance to local bodies funded by tolls. By 1750, over four hundred trusts operated more than fifteen thousand miles of English road.
American colonists knew turnpikes from England, and the United States built its own toll road network starting in the 1790s. The Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, completed in 1795, was the first major American example: sixty-two miles of stone-surfaced road connecting two commercial centers in Pennsylvania. The word shed its gate-and-spike meaning and became simply the name for a long-distance improved road, with or without tolls.
The twentieth century gave turnpike a third life. When states began building limited-access divided highways in the 1930s and 1940s, the name attached itself to the new infrastructure. The Pennsylvania Turnpike, opened in 1940, became a template for the interstate system. The original pivot-spike is long gone, replaced by toll plazas and then electronic transponders, but the name held through every substitution.
