Vèvè comes from Fon (the language of Dahomey, now Benin) ve-ve, meaning 'spirit signature' or 'spirit mark.' The Fon people were enslaved in massive numbers and transported to Haiti in the 17th and 18th centuries. They brought their spiritual practices with them. A vèvè is a geometric symbol drawn on the ground in cornmeal, flour, ash, or gunpowder before a Vodou ceremony. Vodou was born in Haiti as an attempt to keep the spiritual systems of enslaved West Africans alive during genocide and bondage. The vèvè was one tool of continuity—a way to remember and invoke the spirits of a homeland that was already becoming distant. The word vèvè carried Fon lineage even as it was absorbed into Haitian Creole. The practice was suppressed, then criminalized, then gradually recognized as cultural patrimony.
Today, vèvè remains central to Vodou practice in Haiti, Louisiana, and the African diaspora. The symbols are photographed and published. The practice is studied in universities.
