For two thousand years, virus meant poison or slime. Then it meant a pathogen. Then, around 1999, it meant a video your coworker emailed you.

Latin vīrus meant slimy liquid, poison, or venom. It was not a technical term. Roman writers used it for snake venom, plant sap, and anything disgustingly fluid. The word had no connection to disease — the concept of a microscopic infectious agent was nineteen centuries away. Vīrus was sensory: it described something you could see and would not want to touch.

In 1898, the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Beijerinck used the Latin word virus to name a new kind of pathogen — something smaller than bacteria that could pass through a porcelain filter and still cause tobacco mosaic disease. He called it contagium vivum fluidum, a 'contagious living fluid,' and the shorter term virus stuck. The old Latin word for slime became the name for an invisible agent of disease.

The adjective viral appeared by the 1940s, meaning 'caused by a virus.' For fifty years it lived in medical journals and doctor's offices. Then the internet happened. In 1999, the marketing consultant Seth Godin used 'viral marketing' in his book Unleashing the Ideavirus. By the mid-2000s, viral meant 'spreading rapidly online.' YouTube, founded in 2005, made viral videos a cultural phenomenon within two years.

The word completed a strange circuit. Latin vīrus (poison, slime) became English virus (microscopic pathogen) became viral (spreading like a disease) became viral (a compliment for popular content). A word that once described snake venom now describes a cat video with ten million views. The metaphor of contagion held, but the emotional charge flipped from fear to aspiration.

Going viral is now a career goal. Influencers, marketers, and musicians want their content to spread like a disease, which is a metaphor that would have horrified anyone living through the Black Death. The word kept its mechanism (rapid uncontrollable spread) but lost its horror.
