Why we ask
Running the site costs about $100 a month — the servers, the database that holds every word's history, the maps that trace each migration. That is the whole budget. There is no staff and no office. The words are researched and written because the work is worth doing.
If a hundred readers gave a dollar a month, the museum would pay for itself. We would rather have that than a single banner ad.

No perks. There are no tiers, no badges, no members-only wing — everything here is free for everyone, and it stays that way whether or not you give. The only thing a contribution buys is the site's continued existence. That is the point of it.
