Adze descends from Old English adese or adesa, a word of uncertain origin that has no clear cognates in other Germanic languages. The adze may be among the oldest layer of English vocabulary, predating the major borrowings and trade routes that gave English most of its tool terminology. It names something so fundamental that it needed its own word — a word that stood alone because the tool itself preceded all the comparisons one might make.

The adze was the primary woodworking tool in most ancient cultures before the plane was developed. Egyptian tomb paintings show workers adzing timber for furniture and boats. Viking shipwrights used it to shape the clinker-built planks of their longships. Polynesian canoe builders still use traditional adzes — their blades shaped from stone in pre-contact times, now from steel — to hollow outriggers with the same strokes their ancestors used. The tool spans civilizations because the need it addresses — turning a round tree into a flat surface — is universal.
Using an adze well requires a particular physical courage. The blade swings toward the user's feet; a missed stroke or a glancing cut from a knot in the wood means the adze follows through toward the ankle. Shipwrights traditionally wore leather aprons and heavy boots, and still the phrase 'adze work' carried an implication of danger accepted. The skilled adze user develops a rhythm that becomes almost meditative — the same stroke repeated hundreds of times across the face of a timber, each one identical, each one removing a controlled shaving, until a flat surface emerges from a rough log. The rhythm is the skill.
