Old English æmette derives from a West Germanic root *amaitjō, meaning 'the cutter' or 'the biter off.' The modern English word ant is a shortened form that emerged in the sixteenth century. The older form survives in the dialectal word emmet, still used in parts of Cornwall and Devon. The German cognate is Ameise. All these words point to cutting — the ant's mandibles, its most visible tool, were the feature that named it across Germanic languages.

Leafcutter ants in Central and South America cut fragments of leaves, carry them underground, and use them to cultivate fungus gardens. The ants do not eat the leaves. They eat the fungus that grows on the chewed leaf material. This is agriculture — deliberate cultivation of a food crop — and fossil evidence from ant nests in the Caribbean dates the practice to at least 60 million years ago. When humans began farming grain in the Fertile Crescent around 10,000 BCE, ants had already been farming for 50 million years.

The combined biomass of all ants on earth is estimated at 80 million metric tons — comparable to, and possibly exceeding, the combined biomass of all humans. A 2022 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences estimated 20 quadrillion individual ants alive at any given time. The number is approximately 2.5 million ants for every living human. E.O. Wilson, who spent sixty years studying ants at Harvard, called them 'the little things that run the world.'

The word ant has spawned compound words that have nothing to do with insects. Anteater (an animal), anthill (a mound), ant farm (a toy), and 'ants in your pants' (restlessness) all use the word figuratively. The Old English cutter became a metaphor for industry, irritation, and smallness. The actual ant — a superorganism with a 60-million-year agricultural tradition — is more impressive than any metaphor built from its name.
