The word names the ancient past as a unified period — as if everything before the fall of Rome were a single era, which it was not, but the word makes it feel that way.

Latin antiquitas is the abstract noun from antiquus ('old, former'). In Roman usage, it meant 'the quality of being old' or 'ancient times generally.' Cicero used it frequently, often with reverence — the authority of antiquitas was a standard rhetorical argument. If the ancestors did it, it carried weight. The old had moral force.

The periodization of history into 'antiquity,' 'the Middle Ages,' and 'the modern era' was formalized by scholars in the 15th-17th centuries. Petrarch (1300s) saw everything between the fall of Rome and his own time as a 'dark age.' The threefold division stuck. 'Classical antiquity' became a specific era — roughly from the rise of Greece (~800 BCE) to the fall of Rome (476 CE).

English borrowed antiquity from Old French antiquite in the 1300s. The word served double duty: 'antiquity' could mean either the ancient period as a whole or a specific old object (an 'antiquity' — a coin, a statue, a ruin). The Grand Tour of the 1700s — when wealthy English gentlemen visited Italy and Greece — was a pilgrimage to antiquity in both senses.

The plural 'antiquities' has acquired a political charge. The trade in looted antiquities — objects illegally excavated from archaeological sites — is estimated at billions of dollars annually. The destruction of antiquities by ISIS in Palmyra (2015) and by the Taliban in Bamiyan (2001) made the word a synonym for cultural loss. Antiquities are now objects that need protecting, not just admiring.

Antiquity is a word that flattens three thousand years into a single idea. The Egypt of Khufu and the Rome of Augustus are separated by 2,500 years — more time than separates Augustus from us. But 'classical antiquity' puts them in the same box. The word imposes a unity that the period itself did not have.

The destruction of Palmyra in 2015 made antiquity concrete. Columns that had stood for two thousand years were blown up on camera. The word moved from seminar rooms to front pages. Antiquity was no longer abstract. It was rubble. The old had moral force, just as Cicero said. Destroying it proved it.
