Apollo was born on the island of Delos, twin of Artemis, child of Zeus and Leto. He presided over the Delphic Oracle, the lyre, the bow, the sun, and rational order. His epithets included Phoebus (shining, luminous) and Loxias (the oblique one — the oracular). Apollo represented the Greek ideal of rational beauty: everything in its proper proportion, the cosmos operating according to comprehensible rules.
In Nietzsche's Birth of Tragedy, the Apollonian principle governed individuated form, clear boundaries, rational structure, and the beauty of the single, well-defined thing. Sculpture was Apollonian; dreams were Apollonian (each dream figure perfectly bounded). Against this, the Dionysian dissolved boundaries, swept away individual identity in collective frenzy, and expressed life's overwhelming force. Neither could be reduced to the other.
The Apollonian-Dionysian opposition entered 20th-century anthropology via Ruth Benedict's Patterns of Culture (1934). Benedict applied the categories to Native American cultures — the Pueblo people as Apollonian (moderate, cooperative, controlled) and the Plains people as Dionysian (ecstatic, individualistic, intense). Anthropologists later criticized this as oversimplification, but the vocabulary spread widely.
Today 'apollonian' describes any quality of rational order, aesthetic clarity, or measured restraint. An Apollonian musical performance is technically perfect but perhaps cold; an Apollonian philosophy is logical but dry. The god of the lyre and the bow has lent his name to everything measured and precise.

Apollonian is what we aspire to when we want to be our best rational selves: clear, measured, proportioned, in control. The god of the sun and the lyre and the bow represents human excellence at its most formal.
Nietzsche admired both Apollo and Dionysus but ended as Dionysus's defender — life required excess, not just proportion. The rational beautiful god and the ecstatic wine god need each other. Every culture negotiates between them.
