“The Romans had a word for turning a dead emperor into a god — and we still use it every time we call something the highest example of its kind.”
The Greek word apotheosis combines apo ('from' or 'change') and theos ('god'). It literally means 'making into a god.' The practice originated with Alexander the Great, who demanded divine honors during his lifetime. After his death in 323 BCE, the idea that a mortal could become a god — through conquest, through virtue, through sheer force of will — entered the political vocabulary of the Mediterranean.
Rome institutionalized the process. The Senate voted on whether a dead emperor deserved deification. Julius Caesar was deified in 42 BCE. Augustus followed. The ceremony involved releasing an eagle from the funeral pyre to carry the emperor's soul to heaven. Witnesses were paid to testify they had seen the soul ascending. Seneca mocked the practice in his Apocolocyntosis (The Pumpkinification), suggesting Emperor Claudius became not a god but a pumpkin.
Christianity complicated apotheosis. The idea that humans could become gods was heretical, yet the concept of saints approaching divine status performed a similar function. Renaissance artists revived the classical imagery — Correggio painted the Assumption of the Virgin using the same visual language as Roman imperial apotheosis scenes. Constantino Brumidi painted The Apotheosis of Washington on the ceiling of the U.S. Capitol dome in 1865.
English borrowed apotheosis in the 1600s. It now means the highest point or best example of something: 'the apotheosis of jazz' or 'the apotheosis of her career.' The divine elevation has become a metaphor. No one literally becomes a god anymore, but the word preserves the ambition.

Today
We still practice secular apotheosis. We elevate athletes, musicians, and entrepreneurs to godlike status, build temples to their achievements, and narrate their lives as myths. The mechanism is identical to Rome's — only the eagle and the pyre are missing.
The word survives because the impulse survives. Humans need to believe that some among them have transcended ordinary limits. We cannot stop making gods of each other.
