Ataraxía is Greek, from a- (without) and taraxis (disturbance, trouble). The literal meaning is undisturbedness. Democritus, the fifth-century BCE philosopher who proposed that everything is made of atoms, used the related term euthymia for a similar concept. But it was the later philosophical schools — Epicureans, Stoics, Skeptics — who made ataraxia a technical term for the highest human good. For Epicurus, writing around 300 BCE, ataraxia was the goal of all philosophy: freedom from anxiety.
The Epicureans and the Skeptics agreed on the destination but disagreed on the route. Epicurus taught that ataraxia came from understanding the nature of the universe — once you knew that the gods don't intervene and death is the end of sensation, you would stop being afraid. Pyrrho and the Skeptics argued that ataraxia came from suspending all judgment — if you never commit to a belief, you can never be disturbed by discovering you were wrong. Both schools used the same word for a very different kind of peace.
The Stoics had their own version, often using apatheia (freedom from passion) in overlapping ways with ataraxia. Seneca, writing in the first century CE, described a state of tranquillitas animi — tranquility of mind — that was his Latin translation of the Greek concept. Marcus Aurelius pursued it through his Meditations. The Roman Stoics brought ataraxia into Latin culture, though they preferred their own terminology.
The word has no common English equivalent. 'Peace of mind' is too soft. 'Serenity' is too passive. 'Equanimity' comes closest but implies balance rather than the complete absence of disturbance. Ataraxia is the lake before the wind arrives. It is not the suppression of emotion but the state in which nothing rises to disturb the surface. Three ancient schools of philosophy competed for two centuries over how to reach it. None of them questioned whether it was worth reaching.

Ataraxia appears in philosophy courses, Stoicism blogs, and the occasional self-help book. It has not entered everyday English the way anxiety or apathy have. Most people who experience the state it describes would call it 'inner peace' or 'being centered' — phrases that carry the concept without the specificity. Ataraxia is more precise than any of them.
Three competing ancient schools agreed on one thing: the point of thinking clearly is to stop being troubled. They disagreed on everything else — the nature of the gods, the structure of matter, the reliability of the senses. But they all wanted ataraxia. The word names what you have left when everything that disturbs you has been understood, accepted, or released. It is not the absence of feeling. It is the end of unnecessary suffering.
