camerarius

Latin camera meant a vaulted room or chamber. The camerarius was the official responsible for the camera regis — the king's private chamber. He managed the monarch's personal apartments, controlled who had access to the royal presence, and oversaw the household finances. The same Latin root gives us camera (originally a vaulted room, then the box that enclosed a lens), chamber, and the chamberlain.

In medieval England, the Lord Great Chamberlain was among the most powerful officers of state. Physical proximity to the monarch was political power in an era before bureaucratic institutions: the person who dressed the king, controlled his bedroom, and managed his private correspondence was indispensable. Chamberlains across Europe — in France, Germany, and England — wielded influence proportional to their access.

By the 18th century, the Lord Chamberlain's Office in Britain had taken on a peculiar additional duty: theatrical censorship. All plays performed publicly required the Lord Chamberlain's approval until 1968. Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett, and John Osborne all had works refused or amended by the Lord Chamberlain's office. The bedroom official became the guardian of public morals.

Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister 1937–1940, inherited his family name from chamberlain ancestors. His appeasement of Hitler at Munich in 1938 — returning from Munich with a piece of paper and declaring 'peace for our time' — made his name a byword for a different kind of failure to guard the chamber.
