Koḍagu is the Kannada name for the region now called Coorg in English. The word may derive from koḍa, "hilly" or "steep."

Coorg is famous for its coffee plantations and the Kodava people, known for their martial traditions. The region's warriors served in armies across India.

British colonials anglicized "Koḍagu" to "Coorg." The word entered English through colonial administration and coffee trade.

Now "Coorg" is a tourist destination—misty hills, coffee estates, and a distinct culture preserved in the Western Ghats.
