The Latin word for a chariot racecourse became the English word for a course of study — and students have been running laps ever since.

Curriculum is Latin for 'a running' or 'a racecourse' — from currere, 'to run.' In Rome, a curriculum was where chariots raced: an oval track with a start, a finish, and a prescribed path between them. The word was physical. Wheels on sand, horses straining, crowds roaring.

The metaphorical leap happened in the 16th century. Peter Ramus and other educational reformers at the University of Paris began describing a program of study as a 'course' — a prescribed path a student must run from beginning to end. The University of Leiden used the Latin curriculum in 1582 to mean an organized sequence of subjects. Glasgow followed in 1633. The racecourse had become a syllabus.

The metaphor worked because Renaissance education was sequential and mandatory. You did not choose your own path through theology, logic, rhetoric, and natural philosophy. You ran the course in order, like a chariot following the track. Deviation was failure. Completion was graduation — literally, 'a stepping up' to the next level.

English uses curriculum today for everything from kindergarten standards to medical school requirements. The plural 'curricula' persists in academic writing; 'curriculums' has gained ground elsewhere. The word 'curriculum vitae' — literally 'the course of one's life' — extends the running metaphor to a person's entire career. Your CV is the track you've run so far.

Every debate about education is, at root, a debate about the curriculum — what should students be required to learn, in what order, and why. The metaphor of the racecourse still applies: a curriculum is a prescribed path, and the argument is always about who gets to draw the track.

The CV meaning adds an irony. When you hand someone your curriculum vitae, you are presenting the course of your life as a race you've run — with the implicit argument that you've run it well. The Romans would recognize the structure. Start here. Run this way. Don't stop until you cross the line.
