“A mountain on a tiny Greek island gave the world a first name.”
Mount Cynthus rises only 112 meters above the island of Delos, the smallest and most sacred island in the Cyclades. Yet in Greek religious geography, this unremarkable hill was the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, twin children of Zeus and Leto. The poet Callimachus, writing in Alexandria around 270 BCE, first used Kynthia as a title for Artemis, the goddess who had looked down from that rocky summit on the Aegean.
Roman poets of the Augustan age stripped the divine epithet to its bones. Sextus Propertius, writing his elegies around 28 BCE, addressed his entire first book to a woman he called Cynthia, a pseudonym for one Hostia, a freeborn Roman woman he loved and quarreled with for years. Propertius chose the name deliberately: Cynthia was Diana's other name, and Diana was the moon. The moon was cool, remote, and brilliant. So was she.
The Elizabethan court recycled Cynthia with fresh energy. Edmund Spenser addressed his 1595 poem Colin Clouts Come Home Againe to Elizabeth I as Cynthia, queen of the seas. Walter Raleigh wrote his unfinished epic The Ocean's Love to Cynthia as a lament for his lost favor. Elizabeth herself encouraged this lunar iconography: it gave her goddess-status without asking the Church's permission.
The name entered the general English register in the eighteenth century, shedding its mythological weight almost entirely. By the twentieth century, Cynthia was simply a name, carrying only the faintest echo of a moonlit mountain above the Aegean. The nickname Cindy, virtually unknown before 1940, became more popular than the full form in the postwar decades, severing the last thin thread back to Delos.

Cynthia is one of a small class of proper names that have traveled so far from their origins that almost no one carrying the name knows its geography. A woman named Cynthia today is, etymologically, a woman of the mountain, a summit in the Aegean that few tourists bother to climb, on an island that was once the center of the ancient world.
What survives is a kind of residual luminosity. Propertius made Cynthia mean the moon, and the moon means what it always has: constancy within change, beauty that cannot be held. Even stripped of its mythology, the name keeps a quality that resists analysis. She is of the mountain. She is of the night.
