The unit for measuring sound is named after the phone inventor—and it measures sound on a logarithmic scale because ears don't add, they multiply.

Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876. But Bell was not primarily a telephone man—he was a scholar of sound, acoustics, and hearing. His father was a pioneer in elocution; his mother was deaf. Bell trained as a teacher of the deaf and understood sound as physics, not just technology. The telephone was a natural extension of that work.

In 1924, Bell Telephone Laboratories needed a unit to measure the attenuation of sound traveling through telephone wires. They invented the bel (named after Alexander Graham Bell) as a unit of sound intensity. One bel represents a tenfold increase in acoustic power. But a tenfold increase is so enormous that engineers divided the bel into ten decibels—deci (ten) + bel. A decibel is one-tenth of a bel.

The decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. This means a sound at 20 decibels is not twice as loud as 10 decibels—it is ten times more intense. The scale matches how human ears actually work: we perceive loudness logarithmically. A whisper is 20 decibels. Normal conversation is 60 decibels. A jackhammer is 130 decibels. The difference between 60 and 130 is not 'seven times louder'—it is ten million times more acoustic power.

Today the decibel measures not just sound but anything on a logarithmic scale: electrical signals, light intensity, earthquake magnitude. The unit dominates any field where measurement spans many orders of magnitude. A modern world of exponential growth and exponential perception is therefore measured in units named after a man who died in 1922, never knowing that his name would become the language for describing everything that escalates.
