Latin

The Latin word for a step on a staircase became the unit for measuring temperature, angles, academic achievement, and severity — each degree a step upward on an invisible ladder.

Degree comes from Old French degré, from Vulgar Latin *degradus, a compound of de- ('down') and gradus ('step, pace'). The Latin gradus is one of the great architectural words of Western thought: it meant a step, specifically a step on a staircase, and it extended metaphorically to mean a stage in a process, a rank in a hierarchy, a level of intensity. The de- prefix indicated stepping down, but the word quickly shed this directional specificity and came to mean simply 'a step' in any direction — up, down, or along a graduated scale. The staircase image was so productive that it generated an entire vocabulary: grade, gradual, graduate, gradient, degrade, retrograde — all built on the idea of stepping from one level to the next.

The application of 'degree' to geometry — the 360 divisions of a circle — links to the Babylonian mathematical tradition transmitted through Greek astronomers. The Babylonians used a base-60 number system and divided the circle into 360 parts, likely because 360 is close to the number of days in a year and is conveniently divisible by many small numbers. Greek and later Latin astronomers adopted this system, and each division was called a gradus — a step around the circle. When temperature scales were developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Fahrenheit in 1724, Celsius in 1742), each increment was likewise called a degree: a step on the thermometer, a gradation of heat. The staircase image had been transferred from architecture to astronomy to the measurement of warmth.

Academic degrees preserve the original Latin metaphor most visibly. The medieval university was structured as a ladder of ranks: the bachelor (baccalaureus), the master (magister), the doctor (doctor). Each was a degree — literally a step — in the ascent from student to scholar. The graduation ceremony, from the same root, was the act of stepping to the next level. Modern universities retain this language with little awareness of its spatial metaphor: a degree is not a piece of paper but a step on a staircase, and the person who 'graduates' has climbed from one level to the next. The ceremony, the gown, the procession — all descend from a Latin word for putting one foot above the other.

The word's range is staggering when surveyed as a whole. First-degree murder. Third-degree burns. Six degrees of separation. Degrees of freedom in statistics. A 180-degree turn. Each usage preserves the staircase: each degree is a discrete step on a scale, measurable and sequential. The metaphor works because human experience genuinely does seem to operate in steps rather than continuous flows — we perceive differences in temperature, severity, and distance as distinct levels, not as smooth gradients. The Latin gradus encoded this perceptual truth, and the word 'degree' has carried it into every domain where graduated measurement is needed. The staircase is invisible, but we climb it every time we speak.

Degree is one of those words whose omnipresence makes its metaphor invisible. We speak of degrees of temperature, degrees of arc, degrees of separation, academic degrees, degrees of guilt, and degrees of freedom without recognizing that we are, in every case, invoking a staircase. The Latin gradus — a physical step on a physical structure — has become so thoroughly abstracted that the architecture has vanished. Yet the metaphor persists because it captures a genuine truth about measurement: we do not experience the world as a continuous blur but as a sequence of discrete levels. The most consequential use of the word today may be the most literal: degrees of global temperature rise. Each degree of warming unlocks new consequences — ice sheet collapse, species loss, agricultural disruption — in a grimly graduated sequence. The Latin staircase, in this context, is not merely a metaphor but a warning: we are climbing, one step at a time, toward thresholds that cannot be un-crossed. The Romans who named their staircase steps could not have imagined that their word would one day measure the warming of an entire planet, but the logic is the same. Each step is small. The accumulation is everything.
