Delta comes from Greek Δέλτα (Delta), the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, corresponding to the Phoenician letter dalet (𐤃), which itself derived from a Proto-Sinaitic symbol representing a door or tent flap. The capital letter Δ (Delta) is a triangle. The Greek historian Herodotus, writing in the fifth century BCE, is the first to apply the letter's name to a geographical feature: he observed that the land at the mouth of the Nile, where the river fans out into multiple channels before reaching the Mediterranean, is shaped like a triangle — exactly like the capital letter Δ. He called it the Delta of the Nile. The name was so apt, so immediately recognizable to anyone who knew the Greek alphabet, that it stuck and generalized: any river deposit of similar triangular form was subsequently called a delta.
The Nile Delta is one of the world's great deltas by any measure — a fan of rich alluvial soil approximately 240 kilometers wide at the Mediterranean coast, built up over thousands of years by the annual Nile floods that deposited sediment as the river slowed and spread. Ancient Egyptian civilization developed in the Nile Valley but depended on the Delta for agriculture: the Delta's black soil (kemet in ancient Egyptian — the word from which 'Egypt' derives) was among the most fertile in the world, watered and renewed by annual inundation. The Delta was the breadbasket of Egypt, which was itself the breadbasket of Rome. The triangle of land at the river's mouth fed civilizations for millennia before Herodotus gave it its alphabetic name.
The word spread from its specific application to the Nile Delta to geographical usage generally by the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as European cartographers and naturalists explored river systems worldwide and found the triangular fan-shaped deposit a recurring feature of river mouths in sediment-rich environments. The Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta (the Sundarbans), the Mississippi Delta, the Mekong Delta, the Niger Delta — each named by applying Herodotus's insight that the shape was the name. Not all river deltas are actually triangular (most are irregular, shaped by the interaction of river sediment, ocean currents, and wave action), but the alphabetic metaphor survived the exceptions. A delta was a river mouth deposit, regardless of precise shape.
In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, 'delta' acquired additional technical meanings that extended the letter-metaphor into other domains. In aviation, the delta wing is a triangular wing configuration used in supersonic aircraft (the Concorde, the Eurofighter Typhoon). In mathematics, the delta symbol (Δ) denotes change or difference. In finance, delta measures the rate of change of an option's price relative to changes in the underlying asset. Delta Airlines took its name from the Mississippi Delta region where it was founded. The NATO phonetic alphabet uses 'Delta' for the letter D. The Greek letter that named a river mouth has distributed itself across every field that needs to name change, difference, triangularity, or the fourth item in a sequence.

River deltas are among the world's most densely populated and most ecologically threatened landforms. The Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta is home to approximately 170 million people in Bangladesh and West Bengal — one of the most densely populated regions on Earth, built on the very land that rivers deposit and that rivers and seas can reclaim. The Mekong Delta feeds over a hundred million people in Southeast Asia. The Nile Delta, which has supported civilization for five thousand years, is now threatened by sea-level rise, reduced river sediment (blocked by the Aswan High Dam), and saltwater intrusion. The triangles of fertile land at the world's river mouths, named for a Greek letter, are disappearing at rates that no Greek cartographer could have anticipated.
The delta's figurative life in mathematics and science points in a different direction. In calculus, Δ (delta) denotes the difference between two values — the change in a variable. In physics, a delta force is the change in a system's state. The letter that Herodotus used to describe the accumulation of river sediment has become, in mathematics, the symbol for change itself. This is an unlikely but perfect arc: the delta of the Nile was itself a record of change — the accumulated deposit of countless floods, the materialization of difference between what a river carried and what the sea could absorb. The triangle at the river's mouth is the visible proof that the river has been changing its course, its volume, its sediment load, for thousands of years. The symbol for change was, from the beginning, a picture of change.
