Medieval and Renaissance philosophers used discourse for the process of reasoning — the movement of the mind from premises to conclusions. Discursive thought was thought that ran through stages, moving from one point to the next, as opposed to intuitive thought (which arrived at conclusions directly). Discourse was the labored movement of the rational mind through an argument.
René Descartes titled his 1637 work Discours de la Méthode (Discourse on the Method) — a running-through of his method for reasoning correctly. It was in this work that Descartes famously wrote cogito ergo sum (I think therefore I am), and the title Discours captured the character of the work: a careful running-through of his philosophical approach.
Contemporary social theory, particularly Michel Foucault's work, gave discourse a specific technical meaning: the structured sets of statements, practices, and institutions that constitute a field of knowledge in a given period. Foucault's discourses were not just conversations but systems of meaning that defined what could be said and thought in a domain. The medical discourse, the legal discourse, the sexual discourse: each shaped what its subjects could know about themselves.

Discourse has two register problems: it can sound academic and inflated when simpler words like conversation or discussion would do, and it carries Foucauldian theoretical weight in academic contexts where that weight is intended. The word's range from 'polite conversation' to 'structured epistemic system' makes it both versatile and imprecise.

An argument runs here and there, doubles back, explores dead ends, arrives at unexpected conclusions.
