An equation is a statement of equality — Latin aequatio, from aequare, to make equal. The equals sign (=) was invented in 1557 by Robert Recorde, who chose two parallel lines because 'no two things can be more equal.'

Aequatio in Latin means a making equal, an equalizing, from aequare (to make equal, to level), from aequus (equal, level, just). The word entered mathematical Latin in the medieval period to describe a statement that two expressions have the same value. The concept is older — Babylonian mathematics from ~2000 BCE solved equations without the notation or the terminology. The word followed the concept by two thousand years.

Robert Recorde, a Welsh mathematician, invented the equals sign in his 1557 book The Whetstone of Witte. Before Recorde, mathematicians wrote out the Latin word aequalis or used abbreviations. Recorde chose two parallel horizontal lines of equal length 'because no two things can be more equal than parallel lines.' The symbol was not immediately adopted — some mathematicians preferred other notations for decades — but Recorde's sign eventually won.

Equations transformed from tools into objects of study. Quadratic equations (second degree) were solved in antiquity. Cubic equations (third degree) were cracked by Scipione del Ferro and Niccolo Tartaglia in the early 1500s. Quartic equations (fourth degree) fell to Lodovico Ferrari in 1540. Fifth-degree equations resisted for three centuries until Niels Henrik Abel proved in 1824 that no general algebraic solution exists. The equation defeated the equation-solver.

Einstein's E = mc² (1905) became the most famous equation in history — not because people understand it but because it is short enough to remember and consequential enough to reshape civilization. The Latin aequatio — a making equal — expressed the equivalence of mass and energy. The word that means 'these two things are the same' was used to show that matter and energy are the same. The equation did not create the fact. It revealed it.

An equation is a claim. It says: these two things, however different they look, are the same. E = mc² says mass is energy. F = ma says force is mass times acceleration. The equation does not argue. It asserts. The proof comes afterward.

Recorde chose parallel lines because nothing is more equal. The symbol is now so universal that most people forget it had to be invented. Someone had to decide what equality looks like.
