The equator takes its name from Medieval Latin aequator, short for circulus aequator diei et noctis — the circle that equalizes day and night. The root is the Latin verb aequare, meaning to make equal, from aequus (equal, level, fair). The word entered astronomical terminology to describe the celestial equator — the great circle on the celestial sphere directly above the terrestrial equator — before it was applied to the line on the earth's surface itself. Today the equator passes through thirteen countries and is marked by monuments, museums, and tourist attractions in Ecuador (the country literally named for the line), Kenya, Indonesia, and elsewhere. The Mitad del Mundo monument outside Quito, Ecuador, claims to stand on the exact equatorial line, though GPS measurements show it is actually about 240 meters south of the true equator — a fitting reminder that the equalizer resists being pinned down.
