The ancient Greeks called the bright upper sky aithēr (αἰθήρ)—the luminous, divine air above the clouds where the gods breathed. Aristotle formalized it as the fifth element, the quintessence, the substance filling all space beyond the lunar sphere. Unlike earth, water, fire, and air—which were perishable and earthbound—ether was eternal, perfect, and unchanging. Medieval and Renaissance scholars preserved this cosmology, and the ether became a fixture of European natural philosophy.
In the 19th century, physicists faced a problem: light was understood as a wave, and waves require a medium to travel through. Sound travels through air; waves travel through water. So what did light travel through across the void of space? The answer, they reasoned, must be an invisible substance filling all of space—they called it the luminiferous ether ('light-bearing ether'), resurrecting the ancient Greek sky substance to serve a new scientific purpose.
In 1887, the Michelson-Morley experiment tried to measure Earth's motion through the ether—and found nothing. The ether didn't exist. Einstein's 1905 special relativity made it unnecessary: light needs no medium. One of the longest-running assumptions in natural philosophy collapsed. The ether, which had filled the cosmos since Aristotle, was quietly retired.
Robert Metcalfe and David Boggs at Xerox PARC named their 1973 local area network protocol 'Ethernet' as an explicit homage to the discredited ether. The network cable was the medium that carried data the way ether was supposed to carry light—invisibly, everywhere, connecting everything. The name was self-deprecating: they named a real, functioning technology after a fictitious substance. Ethernet became the dominant wired networking standard and has transmitted more information than any other technology in history.

Today
Ethernet is a monument to a beautiful wrong idea. The scientists who believed in the luminiferous ether were not fools—they were reasoning carefully from the best evidence available, and the logic was sound. Light must travel through something. They were wrong about what.
Metcalfe named his network protocol after the failure deliberately. There is something generous in that: honoring the elegant mistake, not hiding it. The ether that never existed now carries the world's data.
