γλυφή

Greek γλυφή (glyphḗ) comes from γλύφειν (glýphein), meaning 'to carve, to engrave.' A glyph was a carved mark — an incision in stone, wood, or metal. The word entered English in the eighteenth century, initially in architectural contexts (the vertical grooves in a Doric column are glyphs). The extension to writing systems came later, when scholars needed a word for the individual carved symbols of non-alphabetic scripts. A hieroglyph is a 'sacred carving.' A petroglyph is a 'rock carving.'

In typography and computing, a glyph is the visual representation of a character. The letter 'a' is a character. The specific form it takes in Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Garamond is a glyph. One character can have many glyphs — italic, bold, small-cap, swash. The word moved from stone carving to digital rendering, but the meaning held: a glyph is the visible shape of a mark, regardless of the surface it appears on.

Unicode, the international character encoding standard, distinguishes carefully between characters and glyphs. Unicode encodes characters (abstract units of meaning). Fonts render glyphs (specific visual forms). The distinction matters because the same character may appear differently depending on the font, the context, or the language. An Arabic letter has up to four glyphs depending on its position in a word. The carved mark changes shape. The carved concept does not.

The word has gained cultural currency through video game design and science fiction. Glyphs in games are mysterious symbols that players must decode. The word carries an air of secrecy and ancient knowledge that the Greek original — a straightforward carving term — never had. A stonemason's vocabulary became a game designer's atmosphere. The carving became the mystery.
