The first guineas were minted in 1663 from gold imported from the Guinea coast of West Africa. The coin was originally valued at one pound (twenty shillings) but fluctuated with the price of gold. By 1717, Isaac Newton — then Master of the Mint — fixed the guinea at twenty-one shillings, one shilling more than a pound. The odd denomination was an accident of gold valuation, not a deliberate design.
The coin stopped being minted in 1813, replaced by the sovereign. But the guinea as a unit of account persisted for over 150 years after the last coin was struck. Professional fees, horse racing purses, art auction prices, tailoring bills, and private school tuitions were all quoted in guineas. The practice was a class marker: tradespeople charged in pounds, professionals charged in guineas. The extra shilling was a social signal.
The guinea system survived into the late twentieth century. Sotheby's and Christie's quoted in guineas until decimalization in 1971. Harley Street doctors billed in guineas. Racehorses were sold in guineas at Tattersalls. The Thousand Guineas and Two Thousand Guineas horse races at Newmarket still carry the name. The unit died as currency but lived on as convention.
After decimalization, the guinea finally disappeared from commercial life. The word survives in the race names and in the phrase 'guinea pig' — which has nothing to do with the coin but shares the geographic reference to Guinea. The guinea is gone from daily British life. No one under sixty has paid in guineas. The word survives in the Newmarket races — the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas — and in occasional nostalgic references. It is a fossil of a class system that expressed itself through denominations.
The guinea's persistence was never about convenience. Twenty-one shillings is harder to calculate with than twenty.
