Harlequin — the masked, diamond-patched trickster of Italian comedy — may be a devil in disguise: his name possibly traces to a medieval leader of the wild hunt of demons.

Harlequin comes to English from French Arlequin, itself borrowed from Italian Arlecchino — a stock character in the commedia dell'arte tradition that flourished from the sixteenth century onward. The Italian name's origin is debated. One compelling theory traces it to Old French Hellequin or Herlequin, a name for the leader of the chasse sauvage — the wild hunt, a demonic cavalcade of spirits said to ride through the night sky. If so, Italy's most beloved comic fool is a medieval devil translated into laughter.

In commedia dell'arte, Arlecchino was a zanni — a servant character, one of the lowest in the social hierarchy, defined by his agility, his appetites, and his cunning. He wore a costume of mismatched patches — practical, because patches were cheap — which later became the diamond-shaped multicolored pattern we now call harlequin. His half-mask left his mouth free for speaking and eating; the huge, expressive eyes of the mask suggested an animal intelligence. He was never the hero; he was always the most interesting person on stage.

The English pantomime tradition, developing from the late seventeenth century, absorbed Harlequin as a central figure — often paired with Columbine (his love) and Pantaloon (his antagonist). Harlequin's acrobatic agility made him ideal for the visual comedy of the English stage, and 'harlequinade' — the farcical action-sequence section of a pantomime — became a fixture of British entertainment for two centuries.

The harlequin pattern — a repeating diamond tessellation of contrasting colors — has outlasted the character. It appears in fashion, in architecture, in playing-card decoration, in the visual identity of court jesters, and in the costuming of countless entertainers who have never heard of Arlecchino. The masked trickster became a textile. The devil who taught himself to make people laugh became a pattern on a coat.
