Initiation is going in — Latin initiatio meant the act of beginning something, from initium (beginning), from inire (to go into), and the sacred meaning came from going into the mysteries: the secret knowledge that changed a person forever.

Latin inire combined in (in, into) with ire (to go). The initium was the entry point, the beginning. Initiatio was the act of beginning, of entering — but especially of entering something sacred. In Roman religious life, initiatio referred specifically to the ceremonies by which a person was admitted to mystery cults — the Eleusinian Mysteries in Athens, the cult of Isis, the cult of Mithras. The initiate became one who had gone in, one who had crossed the threshold into the inner knowledge.

The Eleusinian Mysteries, held at Eleusis near Athens since at least the 15th century BCE, initiated perhaps thousands of people per year into knowledge about death and rebirth that was never to be written down. Cicero, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, and the Emperor Hadrian were all initiated. What happened inside the telesterion (the initiation hall) remains genuinely unknown — no initiate ever broke the oath of secrecy. The initiated were changed; what changed them is still secret.

Anthropologists identify initiation rites in virtually every human culture, though their forms vary enormously. The common structure is Van Gennep's: separation from childhood and society, a period of ordeal and liminal existence, and reincorporation as an adult with new knowledge, new identity, new responsibilities. The Xhosa male initiation (ulwaluko) in South Africa, the Jewish bar mitzvah, the Jesuit novitiate, the Navy SEAL selection process: each uses different methods but serves the same structural function.

The secrecy that surrounds initiation rites is not incidental. The knowledge gained cannot be communicated to the uninitiated — not because it is hidden, but because it can only be accessed through the experience. You cannot tell someone what initiation feels like. You can only initiate them.

The persistence of initiation across all human cultures suggests it answers a need that rationalist institutions cannot fully replace. The bar mitzvah, the university graduation, the military boot camp, the first day of a new job — all attempt the same transformation: marking a person's entry into a new state of responsibility and identity. None of them quite works as well as the old rites, which were brutal, secret, and permanent.

The reason they worked was the irreversibility. You cannot be un-initiated. You cannot un-cross the threshold you were dragged across. Modern institutions offer reversible transitions: you can quit the job, drop out of school, return the uniform. The mystery cults offered no exit. Whether this is wisdom or cruelty depends entirely on what you were initiated into.
