The Arabic word jarrah (also jarra) means a large earthenware vessel, typically used for carrying, storing, and cooling water. The root j-r-r carries the sense of drawing or pulling — a jarrah was, literally, a vessel from which water was drawn, a container designed for the fundamental act of making water accessible. In the arid and often punishingly hot landscapes of the medieval Islamic world, the jarrah was an essential domestic and commercial object: large porous ceramic containers were used to store water, to keep it cool through the natural evaporation that occurs through unglazed clay walls, and to transport it through city streets to homes, workshops, and public fountains. The profession of water-carrying — the saqqah or water bearer — was a recognized, respected, and essential trade in cities from Baghdad to Cairo to Fez, and the jarrah was the saqqah's fundamental tool, the vessel that made his livelihood possible. The Leyden jar, invented independently in 1745 by Pieter van Musschenbroek in Leiden and by Ewald Georg von Kleist in Pomerania, was one of the first devices capable of storing an electrical charge: a glass jar coated inside and outside with metal foil that could accumulate static electricity and discharge it in a dramatic spark. In each case, the Arabic water container's name was extended to vessels of increasing sophistication and decreasing resemblance to their earthenware ancestor.

Today the jar is so fundamental to domestic, commercial, and scientific life that its etymology is entirely invisible to its users. Mason jars for preserving summer produce, cookie jars on kitchen counters, jam jars and pickle jars in pantries, laboratory specimen jars in biology departments, pharmaceutical containers in hospitals and pharmacies — the word covers any wide-mouthed vessel used for storage, regardless of material, size, or purpose. The Arabic jarrah's original specificity — an earthenware water vessel of particular proportions, designed for a particular climate and a particular way of life — has been generalized into a universal and seemingly timeless category. But the engineering principles remain continuous across the centuries: a jar is still a container optimized for preserving something valuable against degradation, whether that something is water in a medieval Cairo street or strawberry preserves in a Vermont farmhouse kitchen. The Arabic water carriers' essential tool became, through the quiet work of trade and linguistic borrowing, the world's word for containment itself.
