Joiku is the traditional vocal form of the Sami people, the indigenous inhabitants of Sápmi — the region spanning northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. A joiku is not a song about something. Sami teachers explain the distinction this way: a Finnish song about a wolf describes the wolf; a joiku of a wolf is the wolf. The voice does not represent; it embodies. This is not metaphor. It is the principle on which the entire form rests.
Joikus are improvised, personal, and often untranslatable. A person may have a joiku composed for them — usually by a parent or respected elder — that belongs to them the way a name does. To joiku someone is an act of honoring them. To joiku someone who has asked you not to, or to joiku a sacred place without permission, is a serious transgression. The form carries strict protocols of respect within Sami communities.
The sound of joiku is distinctive: a cyclical melodic phrase, often without fixed beginning or ending, sometimes wordless or interspersed with syllables that carry emotion rather than semantic content. The voice may drop to a near-whisper or rise into a vibrating cry. Norwegian and Finnish missionaries considered joiku dangerous, associated with shamanism, and suppressed it vigorously through the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Many Sami were forced to abandon the practice.
The late 20th century brought revival. Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, who won the Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 1991, brought joiku to international audiences. Musicians like Mari Boine fused joiku with jazz and world music. Joiku now appears on concert stages and streaming platforms — a form that survived suppression through secrecy, passed within families, and emerged into recognition without losing its essential strangeness.
