The word kanban entered Japanese from two ancient Chinese-origin characters: 看 (kan, 'to look') and 板 (ban, 'plank' or 'board'). For centuries before Toyota, kanban referred simply to the wooden or lacquered signs hanging outside Japanese shops, the same visual language merchants had used since the Edo period (1603-1868). A sake brewer in Kyoto displayed his cedar-branch kanban; a bathhouse in Osaka painted its services on a flat board by the door. The word carried no industrial weight whatsoever.
That changed in 1950, when Toyota engineer Taiichi Ohno began studying American supermarkets during a visit to the United States. Ohno noticed that supermarket shelves were replenished only when stock ran low, a pull system rather than the push system of conventional manufacturing. He returned to the Toyota plant in Nagoya and built a paper-card version of the same idea: each production station displayed a kanban listing exactly what it needed and when, so nothing was made until something was consumed. By 1953, the Toyota Production System used physical kanban cards to synchronize its entire assembly floor.
The cards crossed into software in 2007, when David J. Anderson adapted Ohno's method for Microsoft's IT department in Redmond, Washington. Anderson limited work-in-progress by column, called each column a stage, and posted every task as a card on a physical board. The approach spread rapidly through agile software teams who found that making invisible intellectual work visible on a board exposed bottlenecks no project manager had noticed. Anderson published 'Kanban' in 2010, fixing the Japanese word permanently in software vocabulary.
Today kanban boards appear in Jira, Trello, Linear, and dozens of other tools, most of them digital, none involving a physical plank. The Toyota factory origin is largely forgotten by the developers dragging cards from 'In Progress' to 'Done.' Yet the word still carries its original grammar: 看板, the thing you look at to know the state of the work. Its journey from Edo-era shop sign to global workflow standard is one of industrial history's cleaner arcs.

In offices from Berlin to Bangalore, a kanban board shows what a team is doing right now. Columns labeled 'Backlog,' 'In Progress,' and 'Done' replace the paper cards Ohno pinned on a Toyota wall in 1953, but the logic is identical: make work visible, limit what is active, pull rather than push. The word has traveled so far from its origin that most practitioners do not know it once described the cedar sign above a Kyoto noodle shop.
What survives is the word's original function, not its form. A kanban is still the thing you look at to understand a situation at a glance, whether that situation is a shopfront's offerings or a software team's weekly sprint. See the board, know the state.
