A lecture is literally a reading — the Latin word means 'a reading aloud' — because medieval professors read books to students who could not afford to own them.

Lectura comes from Latin legere (to read), via the past participle lectus. A lectura was a reading. In medieval universities, books were rare, expensive, and often existed in single copies chained to library desks. A professor's primary function was to read the text aloud to students who wrote it down. That was the lecture: one person reading, many people transcribing. The word named the technology — the human voice as a book-delivery system.

The method persisted long after printing made books affordable. By the seventeenth century, a lecture was no longer a reading of a text but an oral presentation on a subject. The professor spoke from notes or from memory, and the students still wrote it down. The format changed — original discourse replaced textual recitation — but the word stayed. A lecture was still called a reading even when no one was reading anything.

The German Vorlesung (literally 'reading before') preserves the original meaning more transparently. When a German professor delivers a Vorlesung, the word still says what the act originally was: reading in front of an audience. The English word lecture obscures its reading origin because it sounds like a word for speaking, which is what it has become.

The lecture format has been declared dead repeatedly — by educational reformers in the 1960s, by advocates of interactive pedagogy in the 1990s, by proponents of online learning in the 2010s. It survives. A professor standing before students, talking for fifty minutes, remains the default format of university education worldwide. The technology the word originally described — a voice substituting for a book — is obsolete. The format the word now describes refuses to die.

The average university student attends roughly 800 lectures during a four-year degree. Most studies on lecture effectiveness conclude that active learning methods produce better outcomes. The lecture persists anyway, partly from tradition, partly from economics — one speaker, two hundred listeners, minimal technology required.

The word means reading. No one reads anymore. The format the word describes has nothing to do with the act the word names. Lecture is a fossil word — the activity it was made for is extinct, but the word walks around as if nothing happened.
