German Lichtjahr — light-year — was coined in the 1830s as astronomers began measuring stellar parallax and confronting the actual distances to nearby stars. Friedrich Bessel measured the parallax of 61 Cygni in 1838, finding it to be 10.3 light-years away. The distance in kilometers would have been 97,000,000,000,000 km — a number with no human grip. Lichtjahr gave it a scale: the distance light travels in one year, approximately 9.46 trillion kilometers.
Light travels at 299,792 kilometers per second. In one year it covers about 9.46 × 10^12 kilometers — nearly ten thousand billion kilometers. The nearest star to Earth besides the Sun, Proxima Centauri, is 4.24 light-years away. The Milky Way galaxy is about 100,000 light-years across. The observable universe is about 46 billion light-years in radius. The unit scales from the neighborly to the cosmic.
The light-year has a temporal haunting built into it. When you look at a star 100 light-years away, you see it as it was 100 years ago. The star you see no longer exists in the state you observe. The farther you look in space, the farther you look back in time. Looking at a galaxy one billion light-years away is looking one billion years into the past. Astronomy is inherently retrospective.
The nearest galaxy to our own Milky Way, Andromeda (M31), is 2.537 million light-years away. When the light now reaching our eyes left Andromeda, Homo sapiens did not yet exist. The unit of measurement is also a unit of deep time — not metaphorically but literally. Each light-year is a year of actual elapsed time, preserved in light.

The light-year is a haunted unit. It measures distance and records time simultaneously. Every observation is a message from the past. The farther you look, the older the message. Astronomy is the only science whose data arrives from a past that cannot be revisited.
