“The Maenads were the frenzied female followers of Dionysus — their name comes from Greek mainesthai, to be mad. They ran through the forests in religious ecstasy, and ancient vase painters depicted them tearing animals apart with their bare hands.”
Greek mainesthai meant to be mad, raving, or frenzied — from the root manos (of the breath, inspired). Mainás (plural: mainádes) described the women who followed Dionysus in his ecstatic rites: abandoning their households and families, running to the mountains, dancing and singing in religious trance. The Maenads were also called Thyiades (frenzied ones) and Bacchae (of Bacchus) — Euripides' tragedy The Bacchae (405 BCE) is the fullest ancient account.
Euripides' Bacchae shows the Maenads at their most extreme: they tear the Theban king Pentheus apart when he spies on their rites, led by his own mother Agave who has been possessed by Dionysian frenzy. The play probes the danger of suppressing the irrational — Pentheus's rigid rejection of Dionysus triggers his destruction. The god punishes those who will not allow ecstasy its proper outlet.
For ancient Greeks, the Maenads represented the terrifying force of the irrational feminine — the part of human experience that civic order could not contain. They were simultaneously dangerous and sacred: the frenzy was divine, not merely mental illness. Modern scholars read the Maenad tradition as evidence of real ritual practices, perhaps archaic religious ecstasy preserved in Dionysian cult.
Today 'maenad' is used for any woman in a state of ecstatic frenzy or passionate intensity. The word appears in literary descriptions of intense emotion, collective euphoria, and — ironically — extreme fan behavior. The religious frenzy of the Greek mountains found its way into concert halls.

Today
The Maenads ran from their houses into the mountains because the god compelled them — or because the god offered the only permission available to women whose lives were otherwise entirely constrained. The madness and the freedom were the same thing.
Euripides understood that the irrational cannot be suppressed without consequences. Pentheus built a wall against frenzy and it destroyed him. The Maenads knew something the rational civic order did not. They still know it.
