Latin maxima (sententia) means 'greatest (opinion or statement).' The phrase was abbreviated to maxima and then to maxim. The idea was that certain principles were so fundamental they outranked all others — the maxima sententia was the most important thing to say. Roman rhetoric prized brevity, and the maxim was brevity's highest achievement: a truth compressed to its minimum.
The French moralists of the 17th century turned the maxim into an art form. Francois de La Rochefoucauld published his Maximes in 1665 — a collection of short, sharp observations about human nature: 'We are all strong enough to bear the misfortunes of others.' 'Hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue.' Each maxim was a complete argument in a single sentence.
English borrowed maxim from French in the 1400s. Legal maxims (principles like 'innocent until proven guilty') and moral maxims (like Benjamin Franklin's 'early to bed and early to rise') became staples of English-speaking culture. The word distinguished itself from similar terms: an aphorism is literary, a proverb is folk, an axiom is logical, and a maxim is practical.
Hiram Maxim — unrelated etymologically — invented the Maxim machine gun in 1884. The weapon's name, a coincidence of surname, created an odd association: the word for the wisest possible statement and the weapon for the most efficient possible killing share a sound. One compresses wisdom. The other compresses violence. Language does not respect boundaries.
